World Heritage Day 2022
Program

HOP ON HOP OFF at the Semmering Railway World Heritage Site
MURZZUSCHLAG
Southern Railway Museum
This is where the tour begins. This museum is one of the most impressive railroad museums in Austria in its diversity and size. You will have the opportunity to talk to the ICOMOS representatives Dr. Günter Dinhobl and Dr. Roland Tusch about the World Heritage Semmering Railway (10 am – 12 am). Furthermore, the Signalpark will be opened to the public.
SEMMERING
Info Center and Ghega Monument
Next stop is the Info Center at Semmering station. You can watch a film about a trip by train from Gloggnitz to Mürzzuschlag, visit the small exhibition, buy books about the Semmering Railway and visit the Ghega Monument.
SEMMERING
20-shilling view
We continue to the Wolfsbergkogel district. A short hike to the most famous views “20-Schilling-Blick” and “Doppelreiterwarte” are a highlight of the tour.
BREITENSTEIN
Viaduct Kalte Rinne
Via the Adlitzgraben and the Viaduct we reach the village of Breitenstein. A very special stop for all travelers is the highest viaduct of the Semmering Railway – the “Kalte Rinne”. This is also the starting point for a visit to the Ghega Museum. A short hike to the working tunnel in the Polleroswand and to the Krausel Viaduct pays off. You can also visit two monuments with glass mosaics by Prof. Christian Ludwig Attersee.
REICHENAU
Exhibition in the castle
Via Orthof and Edlach we reach the village of Reichenau. In the castle Reichenau you can visit the exhibition “Cultural heritage Reichenau”: with original cash chest – pay Semmering Railway.
PAYERBACH
Vinoduct
In the nearby community of Payerbach, we visit the Vinodukt, a vinotheque housed in the longest viaduct on the Semmering Railway. A multivision show effectively demonstrates the creation of the Semmering Railway. A subsequent wine tasting rounds off the program in culinary terms.
GLOGGNITZ
Info-Box Semmering Base Tunnel
Our next stop in the town of Gloggnitz is not dedicated to the old Semmering Railway. We visit the Info-Box with lots of information about the construction of the new Semmering Base Tunnel. After completion this 27km long tunnel will relieve the Semmering Railway.
MARIA SCHUTZ
Pilgrimage church
A visit to the magnificent pilgrimage church with the “Bründl water” and a short hike to the new “Lourdes Grotto” will impress you.
From Maria Schutz we drive via Semmering back to our starting point Südbahnmuseum Mürzzuschlag.
